Heavy breathing permeates the silent air. In and out, through layers of snow-strewn gear. These silver flecks, chill to the touch, intrude upon the goggles' periphery, crackling up the glass like geometric patterns formed from bouts of attrition. Though not confined to a chamber, one's sensory deprivation takes hold. Even on Earth's windswept crown, with the whole of civilization below, mother's wit has been reduced to nil. There's nothing to see but white, nothing to hear but transient echoes.
In the ear, a voice crackles over muffled static. A signal. From below, rising through mountains, or above, falling from satellites. Once incongruent and imperceptible, now perceived as calls from the heavens. Insignificant delusions take on apocryphal meaning whilst surrounded by pallid ataxia. Mirages too fast for bleary eyes to discern. Hands frosted to the bone, ears drooping from accumulating icicles. We've been told death approaches via a tunnel of bright light. What then, when it envelops you whole?
Outstretched like a warm hug, into the ever-falling graces of soft, snug snowflakes lies a body prone and suspended in animation. That is, before a shaking jolt eviscerates nirvana, as screaming voices compete helplessly against whiplash gales and suctioned breathing apparatuses. Those senses, previously lost to oblivion? Overwhelmed to the brink of losing consciousness. Like a defibrillator working on the departed. Whooping coughs, cracking bones, noises from Hell meeting their maker on the steps of Olympus. A black hole on the precipice.
Then, it fades. Time slows to the sun's waning light over the horizon. The beauty, unparalleled and beckoning, like a siren call to desperate seafarers. For once, white isn't all that consumes. Rays of orange teem down in cascading waves, giving the name sunburnt its apt denomination. And with it, endless and resolute, night stalks around the bend. Blinding light gives way to isolated darkness, as radiating flickers dot the sky as they do on distant radio towers. Regretful delirium grapples a deteriorating mind, as nothingness consumes the eternal.
