Curate This - Falling Leaves

If there weren't already enough curated mixes strewn about the Internet, Dozens Of Donuts is here to add more. Rather than analyze a burgeoning genre, herald the best of a past one, or merely formulate background music for study sessions, road trips, or midday snoozes, Curate This aims to immerse listeners in a niche aesthetic that enraptures and vitalizes. With written accompaniment to provide the expository backdrop, these songs flow - errantly or harmoniously - around particular moods, sensory emotions, and pertinent tones. September brings us the gradual equinox. Longer nights, shorter days, and leaves leaving their airy homes to enter the soil anew.

Crests of rounded treetops, like ant mounds sprouting from grass, speckle the New England landscape. Trees withering against the midday sun. A chill breeze moving about their branches, caught between the precious point of bark and leaf. A delicate snap and off they fall. Swaying with serrated curvature as gravity pulls them closer to rough patches of burnt umber dirt. To rest. To decay. To be consumed by Mother Earth.

To the eye, action on the surface is indolent apart from an occasional boot displacing the path it walks on, or a flighty critter nibbling on the neglected frond for sustenance. Underneath, shaded from the pervasive, amber sun-rays, festers bacteria and fungi devouring once-blooming foliage for a peace offering to the atmosphere above. A cyclical communion of symbiotic organisms, forever linked yet perpetually out-of-reach.

Between them - neither in the soil nor the clouds - creatures relish their unspoken union. None more fortunate as the human. Pairs trot under sugar maples and red oaks, hands held under knitted gloves. Winter's encroaching bite felt under the accumulating layers, be it a ushanka shielding what's above, wool socks protecting punctures below. On they walk with a skip in their step, gazing in awe at their errant fascination with nature's recurring death. For they persist. Together. As one.

But alas, time brings all things to pass. One day, maybe not tomorrow nor the next, veins once prominent on leaves begin to impinge on the body. Bones once righteous and dependable, falter with each lumbering gait. The inevitable will arrive. Those younger, with seasons aplenty to look forward to, mourn this fated wilt on our mortal coil. Fearing their own demise, a mere frame - plucked from its root - laid six feet underground. Reclaimed, as comeuppance, where it once originated.
