DJ Seinfeld - Time Spent Away From U Review

SOMBER REFLECTION INSIDE A SWEATING MASS

With subtle shifts, nervous tension, and that sinking, longing feel, DJ Seinfeld comes awfully close to mastering the art of emotive Electronica. While hilarious, the song titles on Time Spent Away From U paint an explicit picture of unrequited love and the enduring search for alternatives whilst on the dance floor. When at his best, whether it's 'U Hold Me Without Touch' or 'Come Thru For U,' DJ Seinfeld borrows the despondent aura of Burial, incorporating weeping R&B samples over distorted multi-rhythms. It's the sound of club's letting out, blaring their speakers through throngs of raucous twenty-something's, the proverbial "U" companionless on the wet sidewalk.

At his worst, repetition replaces desire as clunky loops meander like a flirt stumbling over frolicking feet. See: 'I Saw Her Kiss Him In Front Of Me' and 'It's Just My Luv,' both eager and from the hip, both lacking nuance and flirting measures. Something Time Spent Away From U's stunning conclusion has in spades. A masterstroke of Deep House, 'U' captures the scampering introspection fitted best for those deep in the jostle of bodies. Tame and reflective like DJ Sprinkles' best tracks ('Occasional Feel-Good'), while emoting through nostalgic immediacy like dj poolboi ('like we were the last two people on earth'). Delicate like a flower petal graced by a tempestuous wind, 'U' might be one of the genre's greatest achievements. A piano drips with loss as the pitter-patter - sometimes rain, this time feet - batter around you, forcing movement when the urge of paralysis grows strong.
